1937 Delahaye 135M Navigation
The 135, powered by a 3.2-liter straight-six-cylinder engine, was first presented at the 1934 Paris Salon. The more powerful 135 M followed a short time later, which featured a 3.6-liter engine. In triple-carburetor configuration, the 135 Ms was successful in many of the important races in Europe, including the Rallye Monte-Carlo and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Many European coachbuilders built some of their finest creations on the Delahaye chassis, including Henri Chapron, who was the most prolific during the 1930s.
Henri Chapron was the designer/coach builder for the Delahaye factory designs in the mid-1930s, including the rare Competition 'Roadsters' that were built for the factory. They are arguably the most sporting of any of the Chapron prewar designs featuring aggressive low-line coachwork.
This car, with the unique grille and lower fender profile, is one of two Chapron Cabriolet roadsters known in the world. It was ordered by one of the Delahaye factory racing drivers in 1937. Throughout its life, it has been cared for by several European collectors, including the ex-Renault Grand Prix team manager, Jean Sage. It has just had a complete restoration to return it to its original condition.
This Delahaye is the only remaining Roadster built with Grand Luxe trim, costing 70% more than other roadsters built that year. It features a unique-among-Roadsters laid-back grille, lower fender profile, and interior door surround wood. It is fitted with a competition 3-carb carburetor engine and very rare 4-speed gearbox in lieu of the typical Cotal gearbox.
