1953 Maserati A6GCS/53 Spyder

  • Designed by Fantuzzi
  • Chassis Number: 2052
The competition-oriented A6GCS/53 created a sensation for Maserati from its launch. Just 52 were built in 1953 to challenge Ferrari, Jaguar, and Mercedes-Benz on the racetracks in Europe and around the world. The A6GCS Spyder has a lightweight aluminum body designed and built by Fantuzzi, and it uses an advanced 2.0-liter straight-six engine designed by Gioacchino Colombo and Alberto Massimino. Colombo also designed its space frame chassis which is built of oval-shaped steel tubing by Gilco, who supplied several Italian sports car manufacturers at the time. In total, 48 A6GCSs were built as open Spyders and four were built as Berlinettas by Pinin Farina.

This example was first owned by the British Gilby Engineering team and was driven by Roy Salvadori in 23 races at various circuits across Britain. During its early racing days, it managed five race wins and ten second-place finishes. Its current owner purchased the car in 1995 and, as well as entering it in several Mille Miglias, they drove it on their honeymoon in France in September 1998.
