1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing Navigation
Few motorcars truly live up to the moniker 'iconic.' The Mercedes-Benz Gullwing is one. Produced by the auto manufacturer from 1954 through 1957, the 300 SL was based on the race car that won both first and second place at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1952. The Super-Leicht (SL) burst upon the scene as a road-legal sports car with a top speed of 162 mph.
This Gullwing was acquired by its current owner from the estate of the second owner in 2019. It was quite literally a barn find, as it was pulled out of long-term storage, not having run for half a century. Not surprisingly, it was decided to preserve the car. The original factory cloth seats and carpets and factory-applied paint are all intact, along with the celebrated concave star grille and the original spare tire with factory wax markings. Most recently the mechanicals have been addressed to allow it to participate in 300 SL events while delicately preserving the originality of a true icon with just 19,000 original miles.
