The early 1950s saw the birth of several important and exclusive models, and leading the charge was General Motors with their Buick Skylark, the Oldsmobile Fiesta 98, and the Cadillac Eldorado. Lincoln responded with the introduction of the Continental Division, established solely to build the Mark II, a hand-built, ultra-exclusive coupe that would compete and rival the world's finest from Rolls-Royce to Mercedes-Benz to Cadillac. When it was introduced at the Paris Motor Show in 1955, it wore a restrained style, a luxurious interior upholstered with leather by Bridge of Weir, a bevy of color choices, and a price tag of just over $9,000. The high price tag was justified by its highly scrutinized levels of construction, quality materials, refinement, near-silent operation, and fit-and-finish. The only available option on the very well-equipped Mark II was air conditioning.
This particular Mark II is the final pre-production vehicle, the 14th of 14. It has received an extensive five-year frame-off restoration where every component was restored or replaced. The 368 cubic-inch V8 breaths through a four-barrel carburetor backed by a three-speed Turbo-Drive automatic transmission, and speed-sensitive shocks help maintain a fluid ride. The exterior is finished in burgundy with a two-tone burgundy and white interior. It has power steering, power brakes, power seats, power windows, a Town and Country radio, and full instrumentation. The steel wheels are wrapped with wide whitewall tires and topped with turbine-style wheel covers.By Daniel Vaughan | Oct 2021
