1974 Porsche 911 Coupe

In 2007 this 1974 Porsche Carrera Targa was brought to the Monterey Sports & Classic Car Auction presented by RM Auctions, where it had an estimated value of $30,000 - $50,000. It was offered without reserve and sold for a high bid of $38,500 including buyer's premium. It is powered by a 2687cc horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection and an available 167 horsepower. There is a five-speed manual gearbox and four-wheel disc brakes.

Porsche introduced a Targa model in 1968 in celebration of the Sicilian race, the Targa Florio. The 'Targa' applied to the Porsche model referred to the open-air motoring that was allowed by way of a rubberized insert that could be removed. The design offered roll-over protection. During the 1970s they were very popular, with nearly half of all 911s sold outfitted with the Targa top.

The Carrera Targa was an evolution of the European Carrera RS and first introduced as the 'American Carreras' in 1974. The were given the same engine as the 911S with wider rear tires and a 'ducktail' rear spoiler. Distinguishing them form other 911s, distinctive Carrera lettering on the lower body-sides was a prominent and easily identifiable display.

This example was shipped to the United States in 1974. It is finished in Aubergine Black which is one of the fourteen unusual Carrera colors offered that year. There is black spoked wheels and red Carrera lettering. On the inside the seats are finished in red leather and is all original except for an aftermarket radio. It has traveled a mere 77,000 miles since new with a new clutch fitted after 52,000 miles.
