Sold for $489,000 at 2021 Gooding & Company : Pebble Beach Concours Auction.
This 1951 Kurtis Kraft K4000 Indy Car is equipped with a 270 cubic-inch, DOHC inline 4-cylinder engine with Hilborn Mechanical Fuel Injection and produces an estimated 350 horsepower. There is a 2-speed Offenhauser gearbox, four-wheel Hydraulic Halibrand disc brakes, and an independent front suspension with transverse leaf springs. This K4000 is chassis number 342 and was built in 1951 for Ed Walsh. It was driven by 950 Indy 500 winner Johnnie Parsons as the no. 3 'Wynn's Special' in the second half of that year, winning 100-mile and 150-mile races respectively at Phoenix and Bay Meadows. In 1952, Mr. Walsh secured Bardahl sponsorship and Joe James was tasked with driving this Kurtis at the Indianapolis 500 where it wore number 14 and placed 13th overall.

Sam Hanks drove the car the following year in the AAA championship for Indy Cars, winning the title after triumphing in two races in 342. Hanks drove 342 as the number 3 Bardahl car, placing 3rd Overall at the 1953 Indianapolis race. For 1954, Hanks raced the Kurtis wearing no. 1, earned from winning his AAA championship. The car's final appearance at the Brickyard resulted in a 20th place overall finish. The K4000 was then sold to George Walther, and it was raced on dirt tracks until the end of its career.

The Kurtis was acquired by two additional owners before it was purchased by Chuck Davis who treated the car to a restoration. Tommy Milton III brokered the purchase of the car by Donald L. Weber from Davis in 1986. Weber drove the car in several exhibition events and it was displayed at Sam Hanks' memorial service upon his passing in 1994, the two men having become close friends.

Mr. Schroeder retained the Kurtis for forty-five years.
