The Ferrari 365 GTC/4 shed the traditional Maranello design ideology of swoopy 1960s contours and chrome bumpers, replaced by Filippo Sapino (of Pininfarina)-designed styling incorporating sharp edges and a fastback profile. While the 365 GTB Daytona was a hard-edged two-seater, the GTC/4 was a grand tourer designed for long-distance traveling. Comfortable amenities included power steering, a softer spring rate, and the transaxle gearbox installation was dropped in favor of a conventional five-speed layout with an easier Borg and Beck clutch. Luxury and comfort were paramount throughout the interior, with air conditioning installed as standard, generous swathes of leather, foldable rear seats, and a new instrument cluster. The four-cam twelve-cylinder engine offered 340 horsepower, and the carburation was changed to side-draft Webers to allow an even more raked front profile than that of the Daytona.
Production was brief, lasting just 18 months with only 501 examples built during that time.
This particular example was completed in December 1971 and left the factory in the rare shade of Oro Kelso over a Nero Cogolo interior. It was sent to a Ferrari dealer in Santa Monica, California, via Bill Harrah's distributorship and soon entered the care of its first owner, Hollywood producer Greg Garrison. It is believed that the car remained in Mr. Garrison's care until July 1986, when it was sold to its next Los Angeles-area owner then, reportedly showing 15,000 miles. By November 1990, it had been acquired by Ferrari dealer Ron Tonkin of Portland, Oregon, for his personal collection.
Currently, this car is in the care of Ron Tonkin. This is the 125th of just 501 examples produced.By Daniel Vaughan | Nov 2021
