The National Motor Vehicle Company evolved from the Indianapolis Chain and Stamping company. Manufacturers of the 'Diamond' brand, they were the largest manufacturer of bicycle and automotive roller chains in the U.S. Founded by Charles E. Test, who died in 1910, along with Arthur C. Newby and others, they built cars from 1900 to 1924, originally powered by electric motors. Electricity was phased out as a power source in 1906. Newby was one of the four founders of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway where National won the 500 race in 1912 with an average speed of 78.2 mph. National still holds the record for the largest engine ever to win the Indy 500. The four-cylinder engine displaced 490 cubic inches .
In 1910 National introduced the 450 cubic-inch engine in its Model '40.' That year, Nationals won their class in all forms of auto racing including - Hill Climbs, Road Races, and Long Distance Speedway races. In 1911 they entered three cars in the first Indy 500 and won that race in 1912. This car's original race history is unknown.
