1961 Abarth 356 Carrera GTL Coupe

In mid-1959, while immersed in its new Formula 1 program for 1961, yet eager to maintain a successful GT effort, Porsche sought outside help to keep it's GT Carreras competitive.

The Carrera Abarth GTL aluminum body was smaller than the Reutter 356 Carrera GT in every dimension and reduced drag from 0.398 Cd to 0.365 Cd. This new body also contributed to considerable weight loss – just 1,762 lbs -- very near the FIA's minimum of 1700 lbs. No Carrera Abarth GTLs were exactly alike. That's not so surprising for a small run of hand-hammered cars from Italy.

The Carrera Abarth GTL body was designed by Zagato employee and former Bertone designer, Franco Scaglione. The Turin coach builders, Viarenzo & Filliponi and Rocco Motto created the Carrera Abarth bodies. Just 20 were built and the model remains one of Porsche's rarest production-based racers. The Abarth GTL model is a major part of Porsche's 4-cam racing history. It participated in over 400 races through 1965 logging over 100 class wins and 46 overall victories.
