The speed king of The Amelia's 2022 'NASCAR Milestones' class is Bill Elliott's rule-changing 1987 #9 Ford Thunderbird.
With this car, 'Awesome Bill From Dawsonville' set the fastest qualifying lap in NASCAR history at Talladega -- Alabama International Motor Speedway -- at over 212 mph! So fast that Elliot's feat marks the last time that NASCAR raced on any superspeedway without intake restriction. Elliot and his red number-nine won three of the four speedway races in 1987 including the Daytona 500 and changed NASCAR forever. Aerodynamics had come to NASCAR and brought with it the sort of speeds expected only of Indy Cars, Bonneville racers and Le Mans Prototypes.
