1916 Packard Twin Six Navigation
Packard's new V12 engine had a displacement size of 6,950cc (424 cubic inches) which was only slightly larger in size than the smaller of the two Sixes it would replace. (Packard's 1912 and 1913 Sixes displaced 267.5, 415, 431.9, and 525 cubic inches). The two blocks, each of six cylinders, were cast as a unit with the heads. With help from lightweight components such as aluminum, the new engine weighed 400 pounds less than the previous Six (at 900 pounds).
The new First Series Twin Six was produced in 1915 for the 1916 model year and was available in two-wheelbase lengths. The 424 cubic-inch T-head V12 engine produced 88 horsepower at 2,600 RPM and was backed by a three-speed manual transmission. Two-wheel mechanical brakes provided the stopping power.
This Packard Model I-35 Seven Passenger Touring (the 1-35 denotes it resting on the larger, 135-inch wheelbase platform) is believed to have been purchased new by Lillie S. Roshon of Philadelphia in 1916 who retained it until 1980. Custody transferred to her grandson, Charles Roshon. Howard Schaevitz was the next caretaker, acquiring it in the early 1990s.
This remains a well-preserved automobile with much of its interior leather still in place, and features such as the jump seats show very little wear at all, as are its door panels. The front fenders have been sympathetically repainted in a matt finish.By Daniel Vaughan | Apr 2022
