1974 Porsche Carrera IROC RSR Navigation
This 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0 RSR IROC was first raced by Indy car driver Gordon Johncock to a 10th Place finish. For the second race, McLaren Formula 1 driver Peter Revson finished 4th, and for its third race, it was piloted again by Johncock, finishing 11th after having throttle linkage issues. The top six performers from Riverside were invited to race in the finale at Daytona International Speedway on Valentine's Day in 1974. During the race, the RSR was piloted by A.J. Foyt who finished 6th after the engine failed.
After its IROC career was over, the Porsche was purchased in 1974 by racer Klaus Bytzek, who raced it in IMSA and Trans Am competition during 1976 and 1977, before selling the RSR to Jacques Bienvenue. Bienvenue would race the Porsche for an additional two years in Canada before selling it to fellow Canadian racer David Deacon in 1980. Mr. Deacon raced it in four additional events that year, including the 24 Hours of Daytona and 12 Hours of Sebring.
The Porsche remained with Mr. Deacon until 1988 when it was sold to Harry Bytzek, who in turn sold it to vintage racer Jack Boxstrom in 1994. Boxstrom eventually sold the RSR to Karl Singer.
While in Mr. Singer's care, it was discovered that the car's original engine - 6840030 - (per a factory Porsche document) was installed in another racing 911 owned by Lloyd Hawkins. Mr. Singer was able to acquire the engine and had it installed in this RSR. While the factory Porsche document describes 0030 as the original engine to chassis 0085, the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity lists another engine, no. 6840035, as being original. Either way, the engine installed is a proper Type 911/74 with Bosch high-butterfly fuel injection.
In 2002, Mr. Singer sold the Porsche to Lloyd Hawkins and his in-house race shop completed a comprehensive restoration. The Porsche wears its original India (Guards) Red hue and livery from when A.J. Foyt drove it at Daytona in 1974.By Daniel Vaughan | May 2022
