When this Porsche 356 B 1600 S Cabriolet was completed on October 16th of 1959, it wore a Light Ivory exterior over a red leather interior and was destined for U.S. delivery. It had both a removable hardtop and a folding soft top along with the twin-carbureted 1600 'Super' engine. The overhead valve, air-cooled horizontally opposed four-cylinder unit delivered 75 (DIN) horsepower and was paired with a four-speed manual transmission. It had four-wheel hydraulic brakes, a wheelbase that measured 82.7-inches, and an independent suspension system with parallel trailing arms, transverse torsion bars, and anti-roll bar at front, swing axles with transverse torsion bars at rear. The order for this Porsche was placed on November 11th of 1959 and was sold on December 5th of that year to Dr. Keith Neece. On January 5, just one month after taking delivery of his new 356 Cabriolet, he traded it in to the local Ford dealership, perhaps acquiring something that was better suited to the harsh Chicago winters. James Richard Kerr, an aeronautical engineer, was a recent graduate from the University of Illinois and his father was the Ford dealership's Sales Manager. Along with his wife, Shirley Ann, they purchased the Porsche later that month. Jim and Shirley remained in Illinois with this Porsche until he accepted a position with Ryan Aeronautical in San Diego in the fall of 1963. In 1966, the car developed an engine problem at around 56,000 miles. The Porsche was placed in storage and remained there until 2011.
After 45 years of leisure, the Porsche was acquired from the Kerrs' son by an enthusiast in San Diego, next passing to an avid Porsche collector in Florida. A two-year restoration by marque experts was begun in 2012, preserving much of the original components. Upon completion, it wore a Light Ivory exterior and a new red leather interior with correct German square-weave carpeting and a new top and boot. The mechanical components were completely overhauled including the original engine, transaxle, and brakes. The instruments were properly restored, and the car was fitted with a new windshield and wiring. The brightwork was also re-plated or polished as necessary.
