1967 Lamborghini 400 GT Navigation
Ferruccio Lamborghini and his engineering team which included Gian Paolo Dallara, Paolo Stanzani, and New Zealander Bob Wallace introduced their new 350 GT in March of 1964. The engine design was courtesy of Chief Engineer Giotto Bizzarrini who designed the new 3.5-liter DOHC V12 engine producing 270 horsepower. Dallara's tubular frame had an independent rear suspension setup and the aluminum-alloy Superleggera body was fabricated by Carrozzeria Touring with production contracted to Marazzi. The car was capable of achieving a top speed in excess of 150 mph.
The 400 GT 2+2 model followed two years later, adding additional rear seating along with subtle styling alterations. Among the most visual difference over the preceding 350GT were the four headlights. Engine displacement increased to 4.0 liters and output rose to 320 bhp. A five-speed gearbox designed by Lamborghini chief engineer Gian Paolo Dallara replaced the earlier ZF-derived gearbox. Just 242 were produced between 1966 and 1968.
This particular example is known as an 'Interim' and is one of 23 with this distinction. The 'Interim' models wore the early two-seater bodywork of the 350 GT but employed the more potent 4.0-liter V12 engine. This example is a US-delivery example originally delivered to New York in the colors of Azzurro Fiat over Black upholstery. In June of 2010, it joined the Fleischman Collection and was then sent to Lamborghini specialists Bobileff Motorcar Company of San Diego, California for a thorough inspection. It was determined that a prior restoration could be improved upon, and the decision was made to commit to a bare-metal respray and mechanical freshening. The work included reupholstering the interior with proper cognac leather and the exterior was refinished in the color of Grigio Saint Vincent.
