The acronym AMG was derived from the surnames of founders Hans-Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, and the location of their first premises in Grossaspach, near Stuttgart. Both Mr. Aufrecht and Mr. Melcher had worked as development engineers at Mercedes-Benz in Untertürkheim before establishing AMG in 1967. The purpose of the company was to focus on motorsport activity, an endeavor that Mercedes-Benz was unwilling to commit to.
AMG quickly earned a reputation for its powerful and reliable engines, inspiring them to diversify into various other performance upgrades for a wide variety of Mercedes units. Their modifications grew to encompass transmission, suspension, and brakes. In 1988, they became the official racing partner of Mercedes-Benz and two years later, a deal was struck allowing AMG products to be sold and maintained through the existing global network of Mercedes dealerships. In 1993, both companies unveiled the jointly developed Mercedes-Benz C36 AMG - the first such car to officially share both Mercedes-Benz and AMG badging. As the synergy between the two entities grew stronger, Mercedes acquired a majority stake in AMG in 1999, which led to a complete buyout in 2005. The AMG nameplate is used throughout the current range, representing the ultimate specifications available from Mercedes-Benz, from the A-Class sub-compact to the top-of-the-range AMG GT Coupe.
Since 2006, the Black Series brand has been added to the Mercedes portfolio and is reserved for two-door cars only, representing a further and more uncompromising evolution of an already highly accomplished performance derivative. The Black Series remains very exclusive with just 1,170 total cars produced from 2006 to 2022 through six models.
The Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series was launched in 2011 and was the ultimate development package for the model. Beginning with the 6.2-liter V8-powered standard AMG engine offering 450 horsepower, the Black Series added lighter con-rods, forged pistons, and a lightweight crankshaft (all sourced from the SLS AMG supercar). With these modifications installed, output rose to 510 horsepower and torque to 457 lb-ft. With the help of a seven-speed automatic gearbox, zero-to-sixty mph was accomplished in just 4.2 seconds, with a top speed electronically limited to 188 mph.
Further mechanical upgrades were made to the suspension with a coil-over suspension and widened front and rear track - increased by 1.5in and 3.1in respectively. These upgrades achieved greater lateral grip than their AMG counterpart. These updates required wider fender flares achieving a more aggressive appearance.
This particular Black Series car is finished in Diamond White with a Black leather interior. The seats are trimmed with Alcantara inserts and contrasting red stitching. The C63 AMG Black Series could be optioned with the rear seats removed, however, this example retains the seats. This example also has the B26 Aerodynamics Package which adds a front splitter, front canards and an adjustable rear spoiler (all manufactured from carbon fiber). The Stage 3 Weistec M156 supercharger adds another 289 horsepower to the engine plus an additional 187 lb-ft of torque. The total engine output is approximately 800 horsepower!
