The prototype Bearcat racer was sent to the inaugural Indianapolis 500 race in 1911, and the untested car did remarkably well, finishing the race and beating many established brands, earning the Stutz the slogan, 'The Car That Made Good in a Day.' Building on this success, the company began offering the Bearcat in 1912. They were a road-worthy version of the highly successful Stutz racers that raced at the Brickyard, with two buck seats and devoid of a convertible top or windshield. They had a low-slung chassis that gave them a lower center of gravity and good handling characteristics that complemented their lightweight design. Power was initially sourced from a Wisconsin T-head engine that would eventually be replaced by a Stutz-built, sixteen-valve, four-cylinder unit that drew heavily on Stutz's racing experience.
The Stutz Bearcat was the ultimate in American sporting cars of the time and was challenged only by its fierce rival, the Mercer Raceabout.
This particular Stutz Bearcat recently emerged from long-term ownership in the state of its birth, Indiana. It was used in historic car tours during the 1960s by a former owner and later received a thorough restoration. The current caretaker acquired it during the COVID pandemic and has been sensitively freshened with new paint in a yellow scheme with black fenders, valances and wheels, shod with new Blockley tires. The spartan interior is trimmed in brown leather.By Daniel Vaughan | Nov 2022
