Mercedes-Benz built 1,858 examples of the 300 SL Roadster before production ceased in 1963. This particular example is the second production Roadster built. It was completed in March of 1957 and is one of 618 production Roadsters made for the 1957 model year. The first three examples (chassis 7500037, 7500038, and 7500060) received 1957 Gullwing chassis numbers and were built prior to the standard Roadster chassis number sequence, which began with 7500080 and continued, uninterrupted, through 7500694.
This Mercedes-Benz left the factory finished in Elfenbein (Ivory, DB 608) with red leather upholstery and a black soft top. Among the list of optional equipment was a driver's-side rearview mirror, Michelin tires, US-market lighting and instrumentation, a Becker Mexico radio, and fitted luggage.
A notation included with the car's build stated: 'Internat. Automobil Salon New York Standwagen,' indicating that this Roadster served as the official New York show car (held on December 1956). It is believed that the car was used for promotional duties and displayed at the 1958 New York International Automobile Show, held April 5th–13th. Two weeks later, the car was acquired by its first private owner, George R. Hill of Mahwah, New Jersey. After Mr. Hill passed away, his wife Henriette sold the Roadster to Charles H. Selick in December of 1975. At the time, it had covered 37,523 miles and wore traditional Mercedes-Benz silver. Over the next twenty-five years, the car was driven just 100 miles.
The current owner inherited the 300 SL Roadster and commissioned Mercedes-Benz specialist Hjeltness Restoration of Escondido, California, to perform a sympathetic, body-on restoration. The work was performed between 2016 and 2019 at a cost of nearly $600,000 miles. Upon completion, the car wore its original color scheme and retains its original upholstery, with the exception of the seats, which have been re-trimmed in proper unperforated red leather.
This roadster currently has 38,999 miles on the odometer. It has its original Karl Baisch luggage set, Becker Mexico radio, tool kit, jack, and instruction manual.By Daniel Vaughan | Nov 2022
