Mercedes-Benz built 49 examples of the 300 SC Cabriolet A built over a three-year period, and each example was hand-built to order. Every item of the vehicle was crafted with the finest materials at Mercedes-Benz's Sindelfingen works and many components were bespoke to the owner's needs and desires, including the wood grain and finish.
The economical 170 S passenger sedan was introduced in 1951 at the Frankfurt and Paris auto show, along with the 300 limousine, the 300 SL race cars, and three versions of the 300 S (Roadster, Cabriolet, and Coupe). The latter used a shortened version of the limousine chassis and was powered by a detuned version of the 300 SL engine. Hermann Ahrens penned the bodies, bestowing tall, classic grilles, chrome rings around the headlamps, running boards concealed under the doors, and separate fenders. These personal luxury automobiles would remain in production through 1958.
The 300 S was updated in 1955, retaining the classic look, but gaining a revised suspension and a Bosch mechanical direct fuel-injection system derived from the 300 SL. Known as the 300 Sc, these were the most expensive cars that Mercedes-Benz offered, and just 200 examples were built across all three body styles. The rarest was the Cabriolet A followed by the 300 Sc Roadster of which just 53 examples were built before production ended in early 1958.
This particular example left the factory in Graphite Grey over Red leather with a black convertible top. The interior houses VDO instrumentation, finely detailed switchgear, and a Becker Mexico radio. On the outside, there are Bosch driving lights, color-matched wheel covers, a single driver's mirror, and the signature landau iron.
The car currently wears an older restoration that was performed by Charles Brahms and finished in red over a cognac interior with a tan top.By Daniel Vaughan | Dec 2022
