1958 Thor TH-1A Special Navigation
Starting in 1957, Vilmar Gudmunds and Jerry Ball, both in the U.S. Air Force, combined their skills and expertise to produce the design of the Thor. Named after Gudmund's father, the Thor first took shape in a balsa wood model. Once the design was finalized, they applied for and received a U.S. patent for their design. A wooden buck was created and three bodies pulled from the mold – two coupes and one roadster. By 1958 both bodies were turned into finished coupes – one for Gudmunds; one for Ball. This is one of the first designs created to fit a Volkswagen chassis. Both cars, including this vehicle, Chassis No. 001; and the roadster body (still unfinished) remain today. Today is the first time a Thor has been shown publicly since the late 1950's.By Daniel Vaughan | Mar 2023
