Enzo Ferrari needed greater production and sales to support his racing program. He developed the 250 GTs to facilitate this. These high-powered, lightweight cars' appeal was that they could rive to the race, compete and return home. They were bare essentials on wheels. From 1956 through 1959, 77 were built. Their racing success earned them the badge Tour de France.
Ferrari sold this car to Shell Oil, intending to place two works F1 drivers, Trintignant and Picard, in the 1957 race. Picard crashed before the start and a very hurried course was set to repair the car before the start of the race. Despite very bad handling, they finished 2nd place.
This 250 GT LWB Berlinetta is an all-alloy, 3 louvre example finished in French blue with a red stripe.
