1962 Fiat 600D Navigation
Fiat introduced the 600 in 1955 as the successor to the 500 Topolino. It used the 500's 79-inch wheelbase and was powered by a larger, 633cc water-cooled four-cylinder engine, with the added benefit of a water pump. The suspension was independent, the body was unitary, and there was seating for four. Popular from the beginning, production reached 1,000 a day by 1961.
The prototype Jolly arrived in 1956, and production commenced by 1958. With price tags nearly twice that of a basic model 600, the Jolly was exclusive and popular with wealthy owners with large yachts.
This example is a 600 Jolly Beach Car powered by a 633cc overhead valve inline-4 cylinder engine with a single carburetor delivering 28 horsepower at 4,600 RPM. There is a four-speed manual transmission and four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. It was purchased new in September of 1962 and has remained in single ownership since that time. Delivered to Monte Carlo, it was finished in seafoam green with the trademark wicker seats. It was maintained in the U.K. through the early 2000s before being brought stateside. Much of its recent years have been spent in static display.By Daniel Vaughan | May 2023
