The Ferrari F40 was introduced in 1988 to celebrate Enzo Ferrari's 40 years as a motor manufacturer. Relying on enormous power, low weight, wide tires, excellent aerodynamics and a race-bred suspension, the F40 was capable of achieving a top speed of 201 mph, besting the Porsche 959's top speed of 197 mph.
The F40 was a development of the limited-production 288GTO, and its four-cam 3-liter V8 engine had four valves per cylinder, twin IHI turbochargers, and delivered 478 hp at 7,000 RPM.
The styling was penned by Pininfarina and fine-tuned via wind tunnel testing, resulting in a low drag coefficient of just 0.34. It incorporated the latest aerodynamic aids in the form of a dam-shaped nose and high rear aerofoil.
Of the 1,315 F40s produced, 213 were sent to the United States market. Modifications made to comply with US EPA and DOT regulations included slightly modified bumpers, aluminum gas tanks, reinforced doors, and modified seats with automatic seatbelts.
This particular example was built in the final production year, 1992, and one of twenty-two examples built that year for the U.S. market. It was delivered new on February 22, 1992, to John Appleton of Dallas, Texas, through Classic Ferrari in Richmond, Texas. While in his ownership, the car gained 3,000 miles to its odometer.
On November 11, 1998, the F40 was sold by Ferrari of Dallas to its next owner, Emmett Murphy. He kept it for nearly two decades, a total of just over 8,100 miles had been driven when it entered the collection of its third (and current) owner. The car has received regular maintenance and received its Ferrari Classiche certification on December 20, 2020.
This Ferrari won Platinum and a special award for Best Super Car at Cavallino in January 2021, and an invitation from Ferrari North America to be displayed at Casa Ferrari at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in August of 2021. It earned another Platino Award at the Chattanooga Motoring Festival in October 2022.
