In 1921, this Sunbeam was sent to the United States in chassis form by Dario Resta and given lightweight aluminum coachwork by Brewster of New York. Its four-passenger style Touring body had short and narrow proportions with a bustle tail, a long hood, a locking tool compartment in the passenger door, and additional tool space in cabinets below the seat. It had Rudge-Whitworth quick demountable wheels and a pair of side-mounted spares. The interior has two locking compartments and a full complement of instrumentation. Upon completion, the car was shown at the Sunbeam stand at the New York Auto Salon.
During the 1940s, the car was owned by Alec Ulmann, the founder of Sebring International Raceway. Mr. Ulmann later sold it to D. Cameron Peck, and over the years, it would pass through several discreet collectors until ending up in the current owner's care around 2007.
This Sunbeam retains its original Claudel carburetor with all its original pre-heating system, and the leather wiring covers around the firewall are all still intact. The top still has its original builder's tag, the upholstery may be original, and the floor and seat boards appear original and have factory numbering.
While it appears the car never had a tear-down restoration, its engine has been given extensive service work, and the cooling system was thoroughly cleaned out. A fresh magneto has been fitted, and the German silver radiator has been rebuilt with a new cellular core. The brakes have been serviced, new high-speed rear-axle gears installed, and the six Rudge-Whitworth wheels have been refinished in gloss black and fitted with fresh Blockley performance tires.By Daniel Vaughan | May 2023
