1933 Alfa Romeo 8C 2600 Navigation
This 1933 Alfa Romeo 8C 2600 'Monza' Two Seater Special wears coachwork in the factory Monza style by Neil Twyman. It is powered by a 2,557cc DOHC all-alloy supercharged 8-cylinder engine with a single two-barrel carburetor and produces an estimated 185 horsepower at 5,000 RPM. There is a four-speed manual transmission, drum brakes, and a leaf spring suspension.
Wisconsin-based David Uilhein acquired and traded a number of ALfa Romeos over the years, along with spares - including the engine and gearbox from car 2211083. Chassis number 2211083 began life with the matched engine 2211083 and was a long chassis variant delivered new in Turin. It later came to the United States (either just before or just after World War II) and into the care of Jack Williams. It is believed that Mr. Williams switched the 2211083 engine with a flathead Mercury and modified the coupe coachwork (chopped off the roof). In this guise, Mr. Williams is understood to have driven it on a tour across the country, but when the car let him down, he sold it. In the 1980s, it was found in Arizona and was later restored and fitted with engine number 2311205 in the process.
It is believed that Uilhein acquired the engine and gearbox directly from Williams sometime in the 1950s. These items were shipped to the U.K. and to restorer Neil Twyman, who sourced a new rolling chassis frame from Italy, and the back axle came from Uilhein's P3 Alfa. The work was completed from 1998 to 2000, with the chassis and bodywork being the only significant non-Alfa components. The 2300 engine was bored out to 1934 Monza, 2.6-liter specification as part of its rebuild.
When the work was completed in 2001, it was sent back to the United States and into the care of Mr. Uilhein. In 2007, when Mr. Uilhein's collection was dispersed, the Alfa Monza Special was offered for sale by auction where it was acquired by the current caretaker. It has been well maintained since that time but has seen very little use.By Daniel Vaughan | Nov 2023
