1971 Ferrari 365 Daytona Navigation
In honor of the Scuderia's 1-2-3 result at the 1967 24 Hours of Daytona, the 365 GTB/4 soon became universally referred to as the 'Daytona.' It came equipped with the latest 4.4-liter Tipo 251 development of Gioacchino Colombo's V-12 engine, and with a 9:1 compression ratio (U.S.-spec cars had 8.8:1 compression), six Weber carburetors, and dry-sump lubrication, it produced in excess of 350 horsepower.
Using the same wheelbase as the 275 GTB/4 but with widened front and track dimensions, the suspension was independent all around via telescopic dampers and wishbones.
Although it was primarily a road-going grand tourer, it did achieve competition success, notably with the Charles Pozzi-entered cars winning their class at Le Mans in 1972, 1973, and 1974. Brock Yates and Dan Gurney drove a Daytona from New York to Los Angeles in just under 36 hours in the infamous 1971 Cannonball Run.
This Ferrari was completed on June 17, 1971, and left the factory wearing an Azzurro La Plata exterior over Rosso Connolly leather. A U.S.-specification example, it was given left-hand drive configuration and sold new via Luigi Chinetti Motors of Greenwich, Connecticut, to its first owner, Mr. Lee Becker.
After leaving Mr. Becker's care, it was given a red paint scheme and would pass through a series of owners. It was once part of Japan's Matsuda Collection. In October 1996, it was purchased by Walter Medlin and would spend many years in indoor storage.
This Ferrari has a driver mirror, Ansa exhaust tips, and center-lock Cromodora alloy wheels with Borani spinners. The interior is equipped with power windows, a Voxon radio unit, and Veglia Borletti air conditioning.By Daniel Vaughan | Jan 2024
