1992 Porsche 968 Navigation
Beginning with the 924 of the late 1970s, consistent development of the front-engine, water-cooled four-cylinder Porsche platform reached its pinnacle with the 968 Turbo S. It was a limited-production model for the Kundensport program exclusive to the European market, with a mere fourteen examples (13 series examples plus the prototype) constructed between 1992 and 1994. Porsche intended to produce 100 examples, but due to the high price, the program was stopped in 1994.
The 3.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine powering the Turbo S had single overhead camshafts and produced 304 horsepower and 368 pound-feet of torque. At the time, only the 911 Turbo 3.6 produced more torque within the Porsche lineup. The reinforced six-speed gearbox fed into a Torsen limited-slip differential, and its brakes were shared with the 911 Turbo 3.6. Coming standard with the Sport Chassis pack, the Porsche 968 Turbo S could sprint from zero to sixty mph in less than five seconds.
Styling features of the 968 Turbo S included a large front air intake, a chin spoiler, a large adjustable rear wing, and three-piece lightweight Speedline wheels.
Chassis Number WP0ZZZ96ZPS800412 - The Prototype Turbo S
This Porsche 968 is the only prototype Turbo S built, and it was used to homologate the model for series production. It wears a Speed Yellow (paint-to-sample code 98; this color did not become available to series-production cars until 1994) paint scheme with a black cloth interior and originally wore the license plate 'BB-PW221.' After the period of development finished, this Porsche served as a press car.
After the Turbo S program ended, Porsche sold this prototype car to Sven Quandt. The car remained with Mr. Quandt for roughly three decades and was initially used for personal transportation. It was later deregistered and stored inside as the centerpiece of the entranceway of his mansion. Due to the high level of care, this Porsche remains in largely original condition, with only minor areas of the exterior receiving re-sprays due to road use.By Daniel Vaughan | Jan 2024
