With the introduction of the 300 SEL 6.3 sedan in 1968, Mercedes-Benz had a new category of high-performance sedan that could outperform contemporary sports cars.
This particular Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3 completed production on March 28, 1972. It was given option code 629, specifying equipment for the French market (its destination market). It left the factory wearing a Silver Metallic (180) exterior with a Black leather (241) interior, and came equipped with an electric sliding sunroof (410) and Behr air conditioning (580).
By 1999, this Mercedes-Benz had been imported to the United States. It was given a restoration by Hatch and Sons Automotive of Wayland, Massachusetts, beginning in July 1999. It was stripped to bare metal, with all the doors, glass, trim, engine, transmission, and suspension removed while the car was refinished in its original Silver Metallic (180) paintwork. The transmission and engine were cosmetically rested, with new gaskets and seals as needed. The wood trim was refinished, the gauges repaired, a new headliner installed, and the air suspension was overhauled (along with other mechanical components as needed). The cost of this work exceeded $92,000, completed by July 2000. Additional engine work was performed in October 2007, with receipts exceeding $16,000.By Daniel Vaughan | Apr 2024
