The 1929 Packard line was comprised of a series of models powered by either a new 320 cubic-inch or a 384.8 cubic-inch eight. The Standard Eight received the former, and the Custom Eight and Deluxe Eight the latter. Incremental improvements included a new Detroit Lubricator carburetor, and while output remained unchanged, the new carb improved flexibility. An increase of one inch to the wheelbase and hood length accommodated a new dual-belt water pump. The four-speed manual gearbox (now standard) gained a special extra-low gear, and the one-shot Bijur chassis lubrication system kept the ride silent and refined. Along with Packard's in-house body shop, semi-custom coachwork was offered by Lebaron, Deitrich, Rollston and Brewster.
This 1930 Packard 745 Deluxe Eight Roadster has a generous 145.5-inch wheelbase chassis and is clothed with a 2/4-passenger roadster body. Known affectionately as The Christmas Roadster, this Packard was delivered on December 25, 1929. It has never been given a major restoration and has been well-maintained and freshened as required. Parts of the interior have been restored, including the seat; the kick panels and door cards appear original.
The brass body tag indicates style 422, which was the 2/4-passenger Roadster for the 745 chassis. It was once believed that the body originated on a 733 chassis, but the factory numbering system accounted for chassis type, and a 733 would have a '402' body number. The engine (182597) and chassis numbers (182455) are close in sequence, which, while not definitive, is an indication of a period-correct or original engine.
The car wears a black lacquer finish with brown mottled leather trim, and there are blacked-out radiator shutters and black wheels with polished spokes, black wall tires. There are dual side-mount spares, a trunk rack, search light, and wind wings.
This Packard was part of the Mark Smith collection until his passing. In its current ownership, this Packard has undergone recommissioning and a service performed in late 2023.
The 348 cubic-inch L-head inline eight-cylinder engine powering the Packard 745 Deluxe has a single Detroit Lubricator updraft carburetor and produces 106 horsepower at 3,200 RPM. There is a four-speed manual transmission, four-wheel mechanical drum brakes with vacuum booster, and a solid beam axle at the front and live axle at the rear.By Daniel Vaughan | May 2024
