1964 Morgan 4/4 Series V Navigation
The original 1964 Morgan Series V. Competition Model, had a four-cylinder Ford O.H.V. pushrod engine of 1498 cc. According to magazines of the time the Competition Model Series V had 'kerb weight' of 1475 lb. Four-speed all synchromesh gearbox and was fitted with a Ford GT type engine which allowed speeds up to 98mph. Which along with 'an open 2-seater body of distinctive styling and gives true sporting performance along with excellent high-speed handling.'
This Morgan was originally supplied to British owner Horace G Roberts of Dunhampton, Worcester, UK. The vehicle was dispatched to Mr. Roberts on December 29, 1964.
Mr. Roberts was a regular competitor in competition events known as 'Trials' and occasionally participated as part of the Works team between 1965 and 1968.
Apparently, Mr. Roberts was a friend of Peter Morgan and thus was part of the Works team for the Trials events. Pictures of EUY617C participating in the 1966 Exeter Trials where Mr. Roberts finished 1st. Pictures of EUY617C at Exeter and Land's End are below.
The next owner was Hank Griffin, and the car is visibly identifiable due to the addition of the small roll hoop atop the original roll-bar. Mr. Griffin campaigned the car from in SVRA events from 1988 to 1997 when the car was sold to Grant Larkson of Palo Alto California.
Mr. Larson ran the Morgan in the 1998, 1999 and 2001 Monterey Historics, HMSA events at several venues, CSRG Events at Thunderhill, Sears Point, and Portland Historics, as well as the Coronado in 2000.
In 2005, the Morgan was sold to the current owner who has campaigned the Morgan at the Coronado Speed Festival as well as California Speedway and Willowsprings.
This Competition Model, with chassis number 1039 and original registration number EUY 617C was personally autographed by Peter Morgan.
The car was purchased new on December 29, 1964, by Horace Roberts, Dunhampton, England. Roberts was a regular competitor in English Trials Racing and was part of the Morgan Works team for a number of years, where he campaigned this car. Pictures of this car with the registration #EUY617C at the 1965 Exeter Trials and 1966 Land's End Trials, show the car as driven by Horace. This Morgan came to the U.S. in the 1980s and was converted to a race car for SVRA by long-time Morgan racer, Rich Fohl. The car was then sold to Admiral Hank Giffin who raced the car until he sold it to Grant Larson of Palo Alto. Grant raced the car at several venues, including the Monterey Historics, Wine Country, and Coronado. Ron Carrico has owned the car since 2005.
