1966 Shelby Cobra 427 Navigation
Shelby intended to race the 427 Cobra, but only 51 examples were completed when FIA inspectors arrived at his facility, failing to satisfy homologation. Pivoting, Shelby transformed 29 competition examples into 427 S/C or 'Semi-Competition' models intended for road-going use. They were painted, given fully trimmed interior, and retained the oil cooler, riveted hood scoop, flared fenders, side exhausts, dual lightweight batteries, 42-gallon fuel tank, and external fuel filler of full 'competition' models. Essentially, these were thinly disguised, road-going versions of the 427 Competition Cobra.
This particular example, chassis number CSX 3036, has resided for 25 years in a collection of mid-century American sports and racing cars. Its first recorded owner was Peter Van Valen, who acquired it from S&C Motors in October 1966. A short time later, it was purchased by Ronald Carter, who in late 1967 sold the car to Ken Bender of Eugene, Oregon. Mr. Bender had the car repainted with a McDonald's red-and-yellow livery (his family owned several McDonald's franchises) and run with great success in COWPAC regional SCCA events during 1969 and 1970. It tied for the title in 1969 and won it outright in 1970 by a significant margin.
When Mr. Bender moved from Oregon to Madera, California, he brought the Cobra with him. It was given a new Guardsman Blue paint scheme with gray stripes. In 1981, it was sold to Ken Eber who, by 1987, had refinished the car in red paint and added more than 14,000 miles to the odometer via road and track. Near the end of the year, it was painted black by its next owner, and next reappeared in 1992 under the care of San Diego Padres owner John Moores in Rancho Santa Fe, California. It is believed that Mr. Moores treated the car to a sympathetic restoration performed by Mike McCluskey. Once the work was completed, the car was donated to The Scripps Research Institute in San Diego. In August 1998, it was acquired by the current caretaker via auction.
During the first six years of the current owner's care, the car was comprehensively restored to its current state of presentation by Hall Fabrication of Berkeley, California and Terry Scarborough Racing of Sonoma, California. The engine was rebuilt by Top of The Hill Performance Center in Livermore, California. Johannes van Overbeek meticulously sorted and optimized the Cobra's chassis and suspension settings. Halibrand was commissioned to create a production run of correct-type magnesium wheels using their original molds.
In 2008, CSX 3036 received an ACCUS FIA Technical Passport making it eligible for many forms of vintage racing and rallies.By Daniel Vaughan | Jan 2025
