2014 Porsche 991 GT America Navigation
The factory-built Porsche 911 GT America racecar was designed and developed to contest the GT Daytona class of the United Sports Car Racing Series. This was a new North American-based racing series that began in 2014 following the merger of the American Le Mans Series and the Rolex Sports Car Series. It was sanctioned by the International Motor Sports Association, the series currently known as the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.
The 911 GT America, based on the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, received lightweight bodywork with aluminum-and-steel composite construction, a rescue opening in the roof to allow use of a Kendrick extrication device in the event of a crash, a fuel safety cell with quick-fill connection, and a color Cosworth dash display. Power was sourced from a 4.0-liter, flat-six racing engine with electronic throttle control and 470 horsepower. It was paired with a six-speed sequential transmission that featured a pneumatic paddle-shift system. Stopping power was via 15-inch, slotted, vented, steel brake rotors, with six-piston aluminum fixed calipers at the front and four-piston calipers at the rear. The factory-supplied endurance package included a fast-fill refueling system for engine oil, an oil level display, and a quick-release couplings for all brake calipers.
The Porsche 911 GT America was sold exclusively in North America by Porsche Motorsport North America, Inc. and deliveries began in late 2013 to teams committed to running the entire 2014 USCR season. The price of $269,000 included shipping and a parts package. Fifteen customers purchased the GT America in 2014 and another in 2015.
This particular 2014 Porsche 911 GT America Cup was previously owned by Patrick Dempsey, and is the fastest Porsche ever to climb the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, in just 9:23.721.
This Porsche was based on a GT America and was professionally modified and prepared by BBi Autosport in Huntington Beach. The 3.8-liter GT3 Cup engine runs on E85 fuel and automatically adjusts for race E85 or pump E85. The engine was given twin turbochargers and custom electronics to automatically adjust for altitude, with an output of 900 horsepower at 9,000 feet of altitude. Thus, the engine should produce substantially more at sea level.
This Porsche has adjustable ABS brakes from PFC, electronically adjustable traction control, a Porsche factory sequential 6-speed gearbox with paddle shifters, JRZ Custom real-time adjustable suspension, as well as conventional KW suspension with special set-up by Romaine Dumas.
Currently, this Porsche has three sets of current wheels and tires (1 new set), with all the bodywork specially designed for high downforce. There is a new hood, air intake, custom front fenders, custom splitter, custom under tray, rear quarters changed to factory GT2RS quarters for wider wheels and tires as well as aero, and custom-built rear wing and uprights.By Daniel Vaughan | Jan 2025
