This 1963 Corvette Split-Window Coupe came with a Z06 Racing Package and also a rare NO3 option 36-gallon gas tank (tank car). General Motors built 63 of these cars to be raced by privateers. This car was purchased by Vince Pickens, head of General Motors Mystery Racing Team, and was never raced.
This car has won the NCRS Topflight Award at both Regional and National judging and additionally has won the Bloomington Gold award.
This car had a full restoration in the early 2000s and is a matching numbers car with the original engine.
The 1963 Corvette was a monumental year for this legendary nameplate. The outdated live-axle Corvette model was now updated as was every other aspect of the Corvette, except for the transmissions and engines, which was carried over from 1962. The new fiberglass bodies were now available for the first time as either a coupe or a convertible. Underneath the body was a new, stiffer chassis with an independent rear suspension setup. This engineering would continue with the Corvette virtually unchanged until the 1983 Corvette model year.
Even before the new Stingray Corvettes were offered for sale in showrooms, they were paraded around the country by road racers like Dick Guldstrand, Bob Bondurant, Davy MacDonald, and Allen Grant who proved their capabilities in racing competition.
One of the most desirable options on the 1963 Corvette was the Z06 Regular Production Option, also known as 'Special Performance Group.' It cost $1,818.45 and included several important upgrades. At first, it was a coupe-only option later in the year it became available on the convertibles at a reduced cost of $1,293.95. This reduction was partly due to the deletion of knock-off wheels which were temporarily discontinued due to leaking air. Also, the convertibles were not given the 36-gallon gas tank as it would not fit in the convertible's top storage well.
One hundred ninety-nine cars were given the Z06 option in 1963 and only 63 are known to have had the large 36-gallon tank. The Z06 included an impressive list of options, including the 36.5-gallon fuel tank, bigger brakes and stiffer springs, shocks and front anti-roll bar. Under-hood lurked the L84 fuel-injected solid lifter 360 horsepower V8 engine mated to an M21 close-ratio four-speed transmission. The engine had an improved fuel injection system that gave faster throttle response. The M21 was the first four-speed built at GM's Muncie transmission plant. Other features of the Z06 option package included cast aluminum knock-off wheels and a Posi-Traction limited-slip differential. The major drawback to all of this performance were the car's drum brakes. They did have dual master cylinders, vacuum brake boosters, and wider-finned aluminum drums, but they did not provide adequate stopping power to correspond with the performance produced throughout the rest of the vehicle.
This particular Z06 Corvette is equipped with a NO3 36-gallon gas tank. It is an original, fully documented car that has been given a five-year, no-expense-spared restoration. It scored a 98-percent at National and Regional NCRS events and was honored with a Top Flight award.
The car is painted in 916A Daytona blue acrylic lacquer paint. In 2009, this Z06 Corvette was offered for sale at the Automobiles of Amelia Island auction presented by RM Auctions. It was expected to sell for $225,000 - $300,000. It sold for a high bid of $192,500, including buyer's premium.
