This Corvette started as a bright red 427/435 roadster in the Don Yenko Chevrolet showrooms. Known as the 'showroom' car to L-88 historians and authors, Don Yenko built it up to race specifications using a new L88 engine supplied by the factory. The team had ordered a factory 1968 L88, but was still waiting when preparations had to begin for the March season-opener at Daytona. Yenko and Peter Revson took this car to second in the GT class there. Later that month, the chassis went to Florida again, this time in preparation for the Sebring 12-Hour race. Driven by Don Yenko and Pedro Rodriguez, its engine let go after 43 laps. Following the team's post-Sunoco breakup, Yenko raced this car under his own auspices, eventually winning the year's Midwest SCCA title. This car was subsequently sold by Sunoco to Robert Luebbe of New York, an SCCA racer.
The Corvette remained in its 1970s racing configuration until the early 2000s when it was purchased from Frank Joyce, who campaigned the car in the 1970s and 1980s - having purchased the car in 1976. He had brought the car up to 1970s widebody Trans-Am form. By running a full schedule in 1978, Joyce finished third in Category One of the Trans-Am Championship, and was named Rookie Pro Driver of the Year.
The car has been restored during 2008 by its current owner to its original 'Number 2' 1968 Sebring trim. Following completion, the car has received the NCRS American Heritage Award. Other recognition includes induction into the Bloomington Gold® Special Collection.
The car is powered by a 427 cubic-inch L-88 V-8 engine fitted with a single Holley 850 CFM four-barrel carburetor producing an estimated 560 horsepower (the factory rating was listed as 430 hp). It has a Muncie M-22 close-ratio four-speed manual transmission, four-wheel hydraulic disc brakes, independent front suspension with A-arms and coil springs, and an independent rear suspension with lateral struts, radius rods, and transverse leaf spring.
