1939 SS Cars SS 2.5-Liter Mark IV Navigation
When SS Cars Ltd. introduced the SS 100 Jaguar Sports car in 1935, it popularized a name that the company itself would adopt after World War II. In 1938, the firm added a DHC (Drophead coupe - convertible) version. Built on a 120-inch wheelbase, this convertible had a new crossbraced frame and pressed steel body. It was much admired for its gracefully curved front fenders, which flowed into the running boards. The luxurious interior included a dashboard in French walnut and doors and seats upholstered in Vaumol leather. A padded case inside the trunk lid held a complete tool set. At a little more than $2,000, this model was a remarkable value, and some 281 examples were produced before WWII cut its career short. This example was purchased by the current owner in the mid-1960s, but was placed in storage for over 30 years before any restoration was initiated. Restoration was completed in 1999, and the 2008 Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance was the first time is was shown in three years.
