1957 Maserati 450 S Navigation
This Maserati was first built in 1957 to challenge the V12 equipped Ferrari sport racing cars. It has a four-overhead-cam 273.2 cubic-inch (4477cc) V8 engine producing 400-420 horsepower propelling the car to a top speed of 193 miles per hour or 0-to-100 mph in 11 seconds. The engine is coupled to a five-speed transmission and equipped with front coil-spring and rear transverse leaf-spring suspension and aluminum drum brakes.
The 450S was the fastest Maserati sport car ever made. When a three-liter engine limit was imposed on 1958 world sports-car competition, Maserati withdrew from motor racing.
Nicknamed the 'Bazooka' for its fearsome speed, the 450S was the world's fastest sports racing car in 1957. Unchallenged until the arrival of the Birdcage Maseratis, the 450S dominated both World Championship sports car racing during 1957 and US racing until late 1958 and into 1959.
The fourth of nine 450S built, this car was delivered to 'Gentleman' Jim Kimberly just in time for the Elkhart Lake June Sprints in 1957. The heir to their Kimberly-Clark fortune, Kimberly was an accomplished SCCA driver, and one of the first to bring professionalism into the sport via his support vehicles, crew uniforms and paddock facilities. After Kimberly sold it, this car was rarely raced and the chassis and engine got separated. In the 1970s, Maserati historian Joel Finn owned the car, and was able to locate and reunite the original engine and the chassis. This car was restored in 2008 and has returned to the racetrack after an absence of 49 years.
