Larry Shinoda and his staff were responsible for the Sting Ray and its aggressive lines, sleek profile, and astonishing performance. It would catapult General Motors as a leader in the American sports car market.
The Sting Ray was introduced in 1963 and featured a fully independent suspension. Modification would continue throughout the years with several important milestones along the way. In 1965 disc brakes were added and the 7-liter 427 cubic-inch big-block engine was introduced a year later. It had evolved into a very refined sportscar.
While the car was being equipped with excessive amounts of power and performance, its design became a little more restrained in 1967. The amount of chrome trim was reduced and the front fender vents were modified into a simple five-slot design. Wider, six-inch wheels were given conventional 5-lug attachments with the hubcaps concealing the nuts. The interior was also updated for 1967. The hand brake was moved from under the dash to between the seats. Other changes to braking included a dual master cylinder.
The L71 option offered 435-horsepower for a mere $437.10. The hood of the car gained a hood scoop with contrasting paint on its 'stinger' as an indication of the massive engine concealed under the bonnet. By now, the Corvette had it all; attractive looks, nearly untouchable performance, speed, excellent braking, and good handling.
This 1967 Chevrolet Corvette 427/435 Roadster is equipped with the L71 V8, tri-power 427 cubic-inch engine rated at 435 horsepower. There is a four-speed manual gearbox with a M21 close-ratio gearbox and four-wheel SS disc brakes. F41 heavy-duty suspension, AM/FM radio, spare tire, jack and jack tools, and power windows are a few of this cars' features.
A restoration was performed bringing it back to its original condition. In 2008 it was brought to the Automobiles of Amelia presented by RM Auctions where it had an estimated value of $130,000-$170,000. Sadly, there was little interest; bidding reached $60,000 but was not enough to satisfy the reserve. The car left the auction unsold.By Daniel Vaughan | Apr 2008
