1958 Fiat 600 Multipla Navigation
The word 'Multipla' is Italian for 'all service.' The Fiat 600 Multipla (MPV) was an adaptation of the basic 600 but with seating for six. These small but versatile vehicles had a top speed of about 60 mph from the rear-mounted, four-cylinder engine. There were four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes, a four-speed manual gearbox with synchromesh on gears 2 through 4, and an independent rear suspension setup.
This particular example has been the subject of a four-year, nut-and-bolt restoration. It is painted in two-tone gray and white paint with a gray vinyl interior, complete with the correct white painted metal dash and two-spoke steering wheel. The engine has been upgraded to a later 850cc unit. Additional modifications were made to the engine including a period Abarth header and exhaust system.
In 2007 this small, multi-purpose vehicle was brought to the Gooding & Company auction where it was estimated to sell for $30,000 - $45,000. It was offered without reserve and was one of the first vehicles to cross the auction block during the sale. A high bid of $46,200 including buyer's premium, secured new ownership and the lot was sold.By Daniel Vaughan | May 2008
