Ferrari unveiled their 365 GTB/4 Berlinetta at the 1968 Paris Auto Show. The designed was courtesy of Pininfarina and was a clear departure from the traditional Ferrari styling. The flowing lines were completely new, though the fastback design and truncated Kamm tail had 275 GTB influences. This front-engines GT Sports Coupe was soon joined by a Spyder version. Ferrari unveiled the GTS/4 Spyder at the 1969 Frankfurt Show. The change from berlinetta to spyder was achieved with several modifications throughout. The Spyders had new rear fenders, windshield frame and a flat rear deck with trunk lid. The structure was modified to compensate for the lack of structural rigidity from the loss of the roof. The collaboration between the Pininfarina designers and the Scaglietti and Ferrari artisans resulted in total success. The exclusive GTS/4 Daytona Spyders allowed for high speed travel and open-air touring.
This example has chassis number 17073 and was the last Ferrari 365 GTS/4 Daytona Spyder constructed. The only owner this car has ever known is Greg Garrison, who took possession of the car on September 1st of 1974. He purchased the car from the Maranello factory for the sum of $17,000. This was Garrison's sixth 365 Daytona, with the other five being coupes. Garrison was a Ferrari enthusiast and car collector who enjoyed the 365 Daytona's abilities on the open road, but thought the car was not well suited for around-town driving.
During the cars lifetime, 17073 has been driven a mere 79 miles. It is painted in Oro Chiaro and has a beige leather interior and chrome spoke, lightweight Borrani alloy rim wire wheels. It has hidden headlights and amber parking-light lenses. It has never been restored, repainted, reupholstered or toured.
This unmolested car is one of only 124 Daytona Spyders produced. In 2007, it was offered for sale at the Gooding & Company auction held in Pebble Beach, Ca. It was offered without reserve and estimated to sell for $1,100,000 - $1,500,000. Those estimates were quickly proven to be too low; bidding quickly escalated over the $1.5 million dollar mark. As the gavel fell for the third and final time, the lot had been sold for $2,035,000 including buyer's premium.By Daniel Vaughan | May 2008
