1929 Auburn 8-90 Cabriolet

Founded as Eckhart Carriage Company of Auburn, Indiana in 1875, their evolution into the independent manufacturer of automobiles started in 1900. In 1924, Auburn had a large unsold inventory and approached a hotshot salesman E.L. Cord to run the company, but Cord countered with a leveraged buy-out. Cord set a new focus for the independent manufacturers and put them on the road map as an industry leader. Cord built an empire of nearly 150 corporations including the notable automobiles Cord and Duesenberg, Lycoming engines, Checker Cab, Stinson Aircraft Company, American Airways (later American Airlines), shipbuilding, and radio stations. The company continued to have success but the Great Depression finally closed them down in 1937.
