The Chevrolet Corvette had been shown to the public for the first time at the 1953 GM Motorama held in January at New York's Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. Six months later, the first production version would roll the assembly line in Flint, Michigan. The Harley Earl designed exterior featured a round body, mesh stone guards over the headlights, and a toothy grille. The vehicle embodied many racing characteristics such as the use of fiberglass for the body which was both lightweight and rigid. The two-seater had a soft top and side curtains. In 1954, under the beautifully sculptured bonnet was a 235 cubic-inch engine that produced 150 horsepower. Matted to the engine was a Powerglide two-speed automatic gearbox, the only transmission offered in 1954. In the back were twin 'jet-pod' fenders with 'rocket-ship' tail lamps. They were complimented by the dual exhaust system.
Though the engine was adequate, it did not properly complement such a sporty body with lightweight characteristics. This was something that General Motors would resolve in the years that followed. In comparison to its European counterparts, this was an excellent road-going vehicle with superior handling, comfort, reliability, and safety.
The 1954 Chevrolet Corvette Roadster finished in Polo White with white and red interior was offered for sale at the 2006 Worldwide Group Auction. There was interest in the vehicle, and when the bidding had stopped, the vehicle had a new owner for the price of 269,500. It is a well-documented vehicle with a long history that includes appearances in many books, magazines, and TV shows. It has had a restoration since new and has kept its original mufflers, tailpipes, spark plugs, shocks, water pump, fuel pump, tires, radio, gauges, and more. It is believed to be the lowest mileage 1953-1955 Corvette in existence with the odometer reading just over 1,370 miles since new.By Daniel Vaughan | Nov 2006
