There were two cars built with chassis number 63.002, one had a longer wheelbase and the other a shorter platform. The SWB car had a short racing career, only racing twice, but those two events were rather historic. The first race was in March of 1961 with famous American racing legend, Briggs Cunningham at the wheel. The car was fitted with a four-cylinder engine and ran at Sebring, but failed to finish the race. A short time later it appeared at LeMans where it crashed during practice. It was rebuilt, given a 12-cylinder engine, and raced the 24 Hours of LeMans finishing 4th overall.
That was the end of its racing career, though its current owner still uses it in vintage competition. It was purchased from the Factory in 1990 by Franco and Guido Artom of Milan who traded a restored Maserati 6CM. SWB 63.002 was treated to a restoration with the help of Maserati Factory mechanics and was finished during the late 1990s.
The second car, the LWB version, began its life with a V12 engine mounted mid-ship and originally owned by Cunningham. Its racing history was even shorter than its SWB sibling, racing only once. The race was at Road America in August of 1961 where it placed 9th overall. After the race, it was returned to the factory for repairs; it returned with a new engine. The car was brought to Riverside but it failed to start. The same fate occurred at Laguna Seca in October of 1962.
