The Ferrari 250 GT series was produced from 1954 through 1964 with over 2500 examples created. There were numerous variations created during this time frame and are considered some of the greatest Gran Turismo vehicles ever created. Their presence on the roadways and the racing circuit did much to ensure the visibility and financial security of the Ferrari marque.
The Ferrari 250GT did so much more for the company than just providing financial security and visibility. Multiple times during the production of the 250GT's did Ferrari morph the car to fit racing rules. The company was able to convince the CSI, ACO, and various other motorsports groups that the vehicles were variations of an existing model.
During the lifespan of the 250 GT, there were many variations. Some were tailored for luxury while others favored motorsports.
Under the hood was a Ferrari short block V12 that had been designed by Gioacchino Colombo. The Type 508 chassis that carried the 250 GT's was also revolutionary, comprised of oval tubes and a solid rear axle. Coil springs and parallel wishbones made up the suspension in the front. In comparison to the 250 Europa, the vehicle it had replaced, the 250 GT sat on a wheelbase that had been shortened by 200 mm.
The example shown was originally sold to Sig Vari as a 1963 Ferrari 250 GTE 2+2. It later made its way to Quebec, Canada, and was mostly in original condition. Throughout the mid-1980's it changed hands a few times until it was purchased by an individual living in Florida. He had it sent to Allegretti in Modena to have a body built that was similar to the Drogo-bodied 250 GT (3445). Chassis modifications were necessary to adequately house the new body. The work took a rather long time and the Florida man grew impatient. Just prior to its completion, it was sold to a dealer in California.
At the 2006 RM Auction in Monterey, CA it was expected to fetch $250,000 - $350,000. When the bidding was over it had found a new home at $275,000.By Daniel Vaughan | Dec 2006
