1959 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight Navigation
Oldsmobile produced 383,000 vehicles in 1959 which earned them seven-percent of the American automobile market. The 1959 Oldsmobile line had been completely restyled which marked the second time in as many years. This was done to keep pace with the very popular 1957 Chrysler models which had Virgil Exner's 'Forward Look.'
The 1959 Oldsmobile grew in length and weight. They had a semi-unitized body and frame from the cowl to the rear. The Series 98 was Oldsmobile's flagship car and was offered in four body styles including the two and four-door Holiday hardtop models, a two-door convertible, and a pillared four-door sedan. The wheelbase measured 126.3-inches and the V8 engine grew to 394 cubic-inches and produced 315 horsepower.
The pricing for the Series 98 began at $4,366 in 1959 which included most of the features found on the 88, plus 98-specific emblems and trim moldings, an electric clock, power steering, power brakes, and a 'Jetaway' Hydra-Matic automatic transmission. A wide selection of upholstery including leather, 'morocceen', and cloth in a variety of colors were available.
This 1959 Oldsmobile 98 Convertible is painted in two-tone finish of white and black. There are period correct whitewall tires mounted on steel wheels and 'spinner' hubcaps. The interior is tri-tone leather upholstery with a two-tone black and white dash. This car has the optional power-operated windows, an original AM radio, and a heater.
In 2008, this vehicle was brought to the 2nd Annual Vintage Motor Cars of Hershey presented by RM Auctions where it was estimated to sell for $50,000-$60,000. Those estimates were proven accurate as a high bid of $68,200 including buyer's premium was enough to secure new ownership. The lot was sold.By Daniel Vaughan | Oct 2008
