1931 Rolls-Royce Phantom I Navigation
The Brewster & Company-built Derby Tourer body on this chassis was one of the first five of its type built. These first five have concealed door hinges, which is unique for that era. The body was originally on a Cincinnati Trial car and in the early 1950's was installed on this chassis. Another unique feature was the curved shape of the bottom of the doors. The polished aluminum belt line and the wood trim around the entire passenger compartment accent the cars fine lines. The windshield is low and steeply raked and can be folded down over the cowl for a very sleek look.
Brewster built these bodies so well that of the 19 Derbys built, about 14 still exist. This is known as a 'Springfield Rolls-Royce' since it was actually built in Springfield, Massachusetts, by Rolls-Royce of America.
This is known as a 'Springfield Rolls-Royce,' since it was actually built at the Rolls-Royce Company of America factory in Springfield, Massachusetts. A total of 1,241 'Springfield Phantoms' were built there, in 52 body styles.
The Phantom I was powered by an in-line, 467.9 cubic-inch six-cylinder, overhead valve Rolls-Royce engine. The Phantom I chassis was quite similar to the Silver Ghost. Braking was improved, thanks to a mechanical servo.
The Phantom I is quite similar to a Silver Ghost. The chassis is the same with the addition of front wheel brakes and a more powerful engine.
