Coupe
Shortly after Citroen took a controlling interest in Maserati in 1968, the concept of a mid-engined sports car was proposed, and by 1971, the bora was shown in its final form at the Geneva Auto Show. The first customer cars were delivered before the end of that year. Maserati used a subtly uprated version of its familiar DOHC V8, displacing 4.7-liters and fed by four Weber carburetors. The body was created by Giorgetto Giugiaro for Ital Design, with fabrication being contracted to Officine Padane of Modena. The steering column was adjustable for rake and reach, but the driver's seat was adjustable for height only. The entire pedal box was adjustable hydraulically three inches fore and aft, a first such application in the world for a production car. Maserati struggled after having been bought by DeTomaso in 1975, and the Bora was discontinued in 1980.
