1932 Bugatti Type 46S Navigation
Ettore Bugatti introduced his Type 46 in 1929. With its 5.3-liter engine and wheelbase of nearly 12 feet, the car was intended to challenge Hispano-Suiza and Delage. A scaled-down version of the famous Royale, the Type 46 shared many of the larger Bugatti's characteristics, notably the rear axle and the main bearings mounted directly above the crankcase. The Type 46 combined the luxury and flexibility of a thoroughbred town car with the road-holding and performance of a sports car. It proved very popular, and over 400 were sold, with the last three or four not being disposed of until the fifties. This example was purchased in a totally disassembled state, and it took 14 years to restore it to its original glory. Most of that time was spent tracking down various mechanical and electrical parts. The car is believed to be the only remaining open Type 46S in existence.
