High bid of $225,000 at 2009 Worldwide Auctioneers : The Houston Classic Auction. (did not sell)
The Chevrolet Corvette provided a great platform for aspiring racers to take to the track and be competitive. One such individual was Herb Caplan who purchased a 1965 Corvette fitted with a 396 big-block motor. The car would prove competitive and successful in competition and would lay the ground work for many years to come. He, along with his mechanic/Co-driver, would win 46 wins out of 49 events entered. One of the losses was simply due to mechanical failure.

Many of the modifications to Caplan's Corvette were done by Dick Guldstrand, better known as 'Mr. Corvette.' He spent the majority of his adult life involved with developing, racing, and promoting the Chevrolet Corvette. In 1999, he was inducted into the Corvette Hall of Fame at the Corvette National Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky. As a Corvette racer, Dick won three consecutive Pacific Coast Championships, from 1963 through 1965, including the South Pacific A/P Championship. He won the GT-Class at the 1966 Daytona 24-Hour race, set a GT track record at Le Mans in 1967, and was the first professional driver for Roger Penske driving Roger's Corvette Grand Sport at Sebring in 1966 and 1967.

This 1965 Chevrolet Corvette Race car is known as '8-Ball Cobra Killer.' It was purchased new from John Geer Chevrolet and came from the factory as a Convertible with a 396 motor. The non-essential parts were removed and weight was reduced wherever possible. The initial weight of the vehicle was around 3,700 lbs, after all the modifications were completed, the car weighed about 2,700 lbs. The suspension was thoroughly tweaked, allowing the car to exit corners well ahead of the competition.

The 396 motor was used until it was damaged and replaced with a bigger Factory 427. It was raced in Cal Club SSCA events in the A-Class as well as USRRC GT Category. It even had a successful career racing as an A-Production car in the open GT Category.

Currently, the Corvette has a 427 engine rated at 425 horsepower and mated to a M-21 four-speed manual transmission. There is an independent suspension in both front and rear, and four-wheel hydraulic disc brakes. It was recently featured in the NHRA Museum in Sonoma, after having undergone a compete restoration by a Corvette road-racing specialist. Many consider this car the first big-block Corvette to have been used as a 'test bed' for the new ideas and suspension modifications that allowed it be far superior in the corners than its competitors. Many of these improvements would later be adapted by Chevrolet Corvette drivers on tracks all over the world.

In 2009, this Corvette Race Car was offered for sale at the Houston Classic Auction in Seabrook, Texas, presented by Worldwide Auctioneers. The car was estimated to sell for $300,000 - $500,000. As bidding came to a close, the lot had not been sold. Bidding had reached $225,000 but was not enough to satisfy reserve. Even after extra persuasion by the auctioneers, stating the car had an invitation to the Goodwood Festival of Speed, a buyer could not be found and the car left the auction unsold.
