1958 Sadler Meyer Special Navigation
Bill Sadler, son of the Lucas Electrics Distributor from St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada, built racecars, sports racers, formula cars, and specials after becoming hooked on sports-car racing while honeymooning in England in 1953. He built his last cars in 1961.
Sadler settled on Chevrolet engines after being disappointed with a variety of British engines in his early cars and is credited with being the first to open-up the Chevrolet 283 to 327 CI, years before Chevrolet did the same. This 327 cubic-inch engine setup powers this car. Other components include a Halibrand rear-end and DeDion axle.
While this engine became a popular set-up for sports racers of the day, Sadler's real innovations were in suspension and chassis design. Sadler built the first mid-engine sports racers known as Can-Am cars. Without his expertise, we would have had a longer wait for such cars as the Ford GT-40.
This is the 1958 Sadler-Meyers Special. A one-off car while most Sadlers are of a series. Built for Mr. John Van Myers of Long Island, New York; Mr. Meyers won the 1959 SCCA Unlimited Class Championship in this car.
In 1958, Robert Fernando restored this car and raced it for a few years.
The car was again restored in 2008, by RED LINE, with input from Bill Sadler, now retired from Westinghouse Electric. The car completed the 2008 Colorado Grand.
Its first showing after the restoration was at the 2009 Greenwich Concours d'Elegance.
