1960 Ferrari 400 Superamerica Coupe

  • Coachwork by Pininfarina
  • Chassis Number: 2373 SA
  • Engine Number: 2373 SA
The Ferrari 400 Superamerica replaced the 410 model; each one was specially built to order, with no two cars being exactly alike. The Series 1 Superamerica was powered by a 4-liter V12 engine derived from the 250 GT, and the chassis was a shortened version of the earlier 410. Later Series II models were produced with a longer wheelbase to accommodate rear seats. The first 400 Superamerica appeared at the 159 Turin Motor Show, and 25 Series I cars followed.

This 1960 Ferrari 400 SuperAmerica is one of seven built with special features on a short chassis. The car was special order for the 'Tin King,' Jaime Patino, the Brazilian mining billionaire, and was ordered with many special features. The result was a very fast car that had a unique look. The car was put on display at the 1960 Salon de Paris, the Salone de Geneva, and then used for the Tour Auto.

Mr. Patino toured the factory at least a dozen times in order to get everything precisely to his specifications during the construction of the car including special engine, high compression pistons, high profile camshaft, Solex carburetors, Bosch ignition distributors, special exhaust system 'Tipo Montlery' with SNAPS at the rear, and dual Heuer Chronographs fitted on the center of the dashboard. Other features include 'Royal Blue Max Meyer 16340' color, rear wings covered by 'Spats', manual windows to save weight, dual side lights for parking at night and a special dashboard with only a big rev counter. There was no speedometer as Mr. Patino did not want his wife to know at what speed they were traveling.
