1912 Renault Type AX Navigation
The Renault company was founded in 1899 as Societe Renault Freres by the Renault brothers. The first car, a Voiturette ICV had been built and sold in December 1898. The Renault AX was manufactured by the Renault Company of France. Louis Renault was one of the early automobile manufacturers who offered small, reliable, popularly-priced automobiles. The Renault AX was produced from 1908 to 1914 and remained virtually unchanged throughout production.
The Renault brothers - Louis Marcel and Fernand - decided that their reputation could be built through motor racing and entered many European races. Both Louis and Marcel Renault raced. However, Marcel was killed in the 1903 Paris-Madrid race and although the company continued to participate in racing, Louis never raced again. Fernand retired in 1906.
Typifying its reputation for engineering innovation, this 1912 Renault AX has a counter-balanced crankshaft and oil pump lubrication. The two-cylinder motor develops 12 horsepower. This car was 80-percent restored by its current owner. Maximum speed is approximately 35 miles per hour.
